Algernon Ward: Scientist, Historian, and Politician of Trenton

Algernon “Algie” Ward recently ran for Councilman, which was the next step in his diverse career. He ran with a campaign emphasis on affordable housing, higher employment, assisting the elderly, and safer facilities and better education for the children. Ward is big on education in general. As a young kid, he never imagined he would attend Trenton State College, but of course his mother urged him to attend the school 10 minutes down the road. His education led him into the scientific field. He earned a BS in Biology which led him to work as a research scientist for the Department of Health and the Environmental Chemical Laboratory Services for over 34 years; there he expanded his knowledge into the field of chemistry, as well. This was a significant career move for he became the first African American Research Scientist in the New Jersey Department of Health. In addition to continuing his education, he decided to help continue the education of others by joining the Trenton Board of Education and the Trenton Historical Society. In fact, he once stated that “Trenton kids need to know their own history.” Education is very important to Algernon Ward.

However, Ward is more than just a scientist and politician – he is a historian and a hero of the Trenton area. His devotion to the area shines in his range of works as an avid member of the Trenton Historical Society, as a mentor in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Mercer County, and as a historical interpreter of the African American role in our military. His passion for African American pride in the U.S. military can be seen in his position as the President of the Sixth Regiment United States Colored Troops and 1st Rhode Island Reenactors Inc.

Ward has received many accolades for his admirable service. The Communication Workers of America Local 1034 awarded him the John Weinland Community Service Award. While attending Trenton State College, he received the Outstanding Service Award, and the Volunteer Award of project S.M.I.L.W. of Mercer County Community College. He is always doing something great for his neighborhood.
