Cover Letter

To whom it may concern,

I am a third-year student completing a Bachelor of Communication at the University of Newcastle. As part of my education I completed a semester of study abroad at The College of New Jersey. I will graduate in November of 2019 with majors in journalism and public relations. I am passionate about creative communications for the food industry including restaurant reviews, feature stories and strategic public relations on behalf of hospitality establishments.

Prior to undertaking my degree, I completed an apprenticeship in commercial cookery with a specialist diploma in patisserie. I have six years’ experience in the hospitality industry which includes working as a kitchen assistant, apprentice, qualified chef and sous chef. My employment in this industry has enhanced my appreciation of working to a deadline, teamwork, strong communication and most importantly armed me with intrinsic knowledge of restaurants and cuisine.

In 2018 I completed a four-month internship with Wild and Free Media, a marketing and communications agency. During this training I gained skills in composing engaging content that targets niche audiences with an effective brand voice. I published this content across multiple platforms including social media and WordPress blogs and strategically issued news releases and proposals to the media and potential clients. I also regularly compose articles for Crave New Media’s online “food diary”. This content includes guides and updates on Newcastle’s food scene which requires me to regularly research food trends and remain up-to-date on the city’s events and restaurant launches.

I consciously use my extensive experience in the hospitality industry to inform my writing for the food journalism and public relations industries. I am confident in my use of terminology and literary devices to engage my audience and allow them to visualise my narrative. I believe my qualifications as a chef and appreciation for cuisine provides me with a professional advantage when composing content in the food and restaurant beat. I would appreciate the opportunity to join your team and help shape the narrative you share with your audience. I have attached my resume and contact details if you are interested in negotiating a professional relationship.

Looking forward to your response

Sincerely, Zoe Drew
