Interview with an Editor: Philip Yam

I had the opportunity to talk to Philip Yam, who is the president of the New York chapter for the Asian American Journalist Association (AAJA). He was also an editor for the magazine Scientific American and wrote a book called The Pathological Protein: Mad Cow, Chronic Wasting, and Other Deadly Prion Diseases, which explores the effects of prions and how they were connected to the Mad Cow disease epidemic. Yam discusses the shift from receiving written letters to viewing comments left on online articles. His main stance on the assimilation of technology to the journalism world is primarily that of concern as the digital age has opened doors to trolling and spambots as opposed to actual discussions taking place. In terms of the future of American journalism, the primary solution he suggests is for journalists to learn and exercise their responsibilities as a key component in the media.
