Al Stampone and His Publishing Company

As an aspiring writer and publisher, Al Stampone wanted to make a big difference in small communities.

After graduating from college, Al Stampone pursued his love for writing within his community and beyond. After working as a writer for several newspapers and magazines, Stampone created his own publication, the Downtown Magazine, which aimed to connect communities in a vibrant, dynamic, and colorful print magazine. Over fifteen years have passed since Downtown’s first edition. Today the publication has spread to towns like Wyckoff, Rutherford, and Ramsey – each with its own unique flair and personality.

Stampone is wary for the future of small publications and journalism, but encourages readers and writers to always seek out the truth. In this interview, Stampone summarizes his past experiences, his current projects, and his favorite experiences as a part of journalism history. Regardless of the political climate, he intends on continuing this publication in print, online, or wherever the future may lead him.

“That’s how it works! It’s pretty organic. We’re plugged into the community and we get to know people.”
