Final Project: PFC Robert Leckie

Robert Leckie was an author who joined the US Marine Corps following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He has fought in every battle with the Marines in the Pacific, including Guadalcanal and Peleliu. Getting his start as a sports writer in high school, Leckie has always has an affinity for the written word. “I always wanted to be a writer since I could remember,” he once stated in an interview with Brian Lamb in 1995. He has written a number of books about the war he had experienced, as well as The Vietnam War, and other historical subjects.

At the end of the war, he had aimed to tell people the harsh realities of what he and his men endured. His dedication to wanting to preserve their experiences for decades to come is very strengthening and admirable to me, personally. Of his death in 2001 from Alzheimer’s disease, his son, David Leckie recalls, “He had forgotten all of us. He never forgot being in the Pacific.”
