The Return of Ween
After nearly four years apart, fictitiously named rockers Gene and Dean Ween have reunited. Ween, started in 1984 by Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo in New Hope, PA have joined forces for the first time since 2011 and will play three shows at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, CO over President’s Day weekend. After breaking up, Freeman had said that he was ready to close the door on this chapter of his life, but it seems that the door has reopened and a new chapter is to be written.
The Pennsylvania bandmates were regulars of City Gardens in Trenton New Jersey and opened for Butthole Surfers on the night of the notorious fire incident in which Gibby Hanes of Butthole Surfers nearly burned the building down, Ween grew a following in the early 90’s with records such as GodWeenSatan, Chocolate and Cheese, and The Mollusk. In 1992, their single Push th’ Little Daises of the album Pure Guava gained them media attention from the MTV cartoon Beavis and Butt-Head. In later years the band upped the production value on their records and added touring member to replicate the sound on the albums.
But after more than 27 years together, Melchiondo and Freeman hung up their monikers until now. Having last performed together on New Year’s Eve in 2011, it has been reported that Ween will be showcasing old classics as well as unrecorded material that the public hasn’t heard before. Though Ween has not released an album since La Cucaracha in 2007 and there has been speculation about the possibility of a future release.
