A discussion about contested objects with Professor Murray
Hello everyone,
Today I take on a contentious topic within art history: objects of contested origin. These objects have been looted, stolen, seized by colonial powers, but what should happen to them now that they sit behind glass cases in our favorite museums? Should they be returned or should they remain where they are? Today I spoke with Professor David Murray, a professor and Librarian at The College of New Jersey, a professor of Mesoamerican art, which has historically been a large target of looting, as well as forgeries. We will discuss repatriation, the responsibility of museums and historians, as well as a sculpture that was used to prop up a chicken coop…that is until it was revealed to be a priceless Olmec artifact.
