James Queally Interview: The Value of Storytelling
My name is Marcus Allen and I am a senior at The College of New Jersey (Ewing, NJ). I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in African-American Studies with minors in Journalism/Professional Writing and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies.
On October 29, 2020, I had the opportunity to interview James Queally. The reason for this interview is to have a chance to speak with a news veteran about their experiences in the facing changing world of journalism. We spoke about how his upbringing pushed him to the news writing, how he grew up during a time with the advancement in technology and how he navigated and negotiated spaces to be the success person he is today.
James Queally graduated from The College of New Jersey in 2009. Post-graduation, Queally worked for the Star Ledger in Newark, NJ and is now working at the Los Angeles Times as a crime reporter. Recently, Queally and his team won a Pulitzer Prize in 2016 for their coverage and reporting of the 2014 San Bernardino shooting and terror attacks.
I believe Queally was an excellent person to interview and that his interview shows how and why he is such a successful and valuable storyteller.
