Sarah Dash

Born the seventh child of thirteen in Trenton, New Jersey, Sarah Dash rose to fame as a funk/ jazz singer in the 1970’s. Dash started in music by singing in her family church, and throughout middle school and high school.  During high school she joined the the quartet, Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles. The group later became known as “Labelle” and is best known for their international hit “Lady Marmalade”, and being the first African American woman group to perform at the New York Metropolitan Opera House. She has also sang with the Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper and many more. After her group broke apart, Sarah Dash went solo. She is a heavy advocate for music and art education, and has been named a Trenton Music Ambassador. Sarah Dash is also in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, apart of the Grammy Board of Governors, she is the Grammy New Jersey Ambassador for the Advocacy Board of the Membership Committee, and is on the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic Orchestra. Sarah does a lot of work with the Trenton Downtown Association, and worked with the Trenton Children’s Choir in a show in August.

 

• Sarah Dash was recently on tour in New York and the Trenton area, her last show was August 9 at the Levitt AMP in Trenton
• In 2014, Sarah Dash came to TCNJ to speak about her life and music. Professors then asked her to take part in the creation of the course “Trenton Makes Music” — she is now the podcast host, consultant and guest lecturer. 
• In 2017 Sarah Dash was appointed by the mayor of Trenton as the Music Ambassador of the city of Trenton. This position advocates for the musical performing arts, and how music can change lives.
