Interview with Ian T. Shearn

Ian Shearn has been a professional journalist for over 30 years. He started his career at the Trentonian in 1981 and currently works as a freelancer covering a range of issues, with a focus on political corruption. While working at the Star Ledger in 2005, Mr. Shearn won a Pulitzer Prize for covering the scandal and subsequent resignation of former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey, who made his secret lover a security advisor despite a lack of qualifications. Also very important was his investigative work regarding former Newark Mayor Sharpe James, which led to James being convicted of fraud and sentenced to 27 months in prison. Mr. Shearn is concerned about the future of Journalism and the potential effects of the need for publications to be profitable. He witnessed the struggles of the industry firsthand while at the Star Ledger. Mr Shearn also emphasized the importance of source reliability in investigative journalism, which is also something I agree with.
