A yellow pipe on TCNJ campus exudes the exhaust that has puzzled students of The College of New Jersey for years. It is excess steam pictured here that is created by a turbine. The turbine creates steam that generates most of the electricity of the campus; it provides temperature regulation as well for the buildings.
The piping system for the steam is degraded. It does not distribute steam evenly throughout the system because the campus's pipe system prior to 1970 used to obtain its water from wells resulting in mineral rich water corroding the pipes.
