Old Barracks Museum- The Old Barracks Museum is located in Trenton, New Jersey and is only 10 minutes away from campus. The goal of the Old Barracks Museum is to create the old colonial America, they are able to do this through interpretive programs, exhibits and preservations. Their goal is to create a real life experience into what colonial times were like in New Jersey, it is astonishing how they are able to do this. Throughout history the Old Barracks has been used during war and throughout time, it was first built in 1758 for the sole purpose of housing British soldiers during the French and Indian War. It was also used during the revolutionary war for British prisoners of war and an army hospital, in the 9th century the Old Barracks had a portion of it demolished to extend Front Street. Two of the remaining structures still stand and became a part of the Trenton landscape. At the beginning of the 20th century members of the Daughters of the American Revolution purchased the south side of the original barracks with the intention to preserve it and make a museum out of it. In 1914 the state of New Jersey bought the other half of the barracks and made an agreement to give ownership of the barracks to the Daughters of the American Revolution with the hope for them to operate the building as a museum. The building was was also restored and they rebuilt the middle section that was knocked down. From 1985-1998 the barracks went through a multi million dollar restoration making it what it looks like today, this appearance is believed to be what the barracks looked like when it was first built. This is an important landmark in American history and it is very cool that it resides in Trenton and is only ten minutes from campus, this is definitely a place I will consider taking a trip to in the near future.
