Oral History Interview: TCNJ Professor recounts Journalism Journey
On April 2nd, I had the pleasure of interviewing Emilie Lounsberry, a 35 year long journalism veteran who has a plethora of experiences within the field and shows no signs of slowing down.
Lounsberry first got her start doing freelance work for the Philadelphia Inquirer, and then at the Daily Intelligencer, a paper in Bucks County, PA. all while a student at Temple University studying Journalism. At the Intelligencer, Lounsberry was covering stories in the court room, covering trials and the American legal system. She then traveled to the Philadelphia Inquirer full time where she was able to covered many big scale cases. The most extraordinary cases Lounsberry has covered includes, Bush v. Gore court battle for the presidency, the execution of Timothy McVeigh, and the Bill Cosby court case.
Lounsberry discussed the competitive nature of the Inquirer and the field itself was always demanding. As journalism adapted, Lounsberry was able to as well. The only major change was how fast the story needed to be filed. In the beginning of her career she typically had until the end of the day, however, now it’s as soon as you have the info the story has to be filed.
As far as the future of journalism, Lounsberry believes that it is going to a good place, the internet has provided a lot of new opportunities for media, news, tv, and other platforms.
