Douglas Palmer – Getting to know Trenton and Ewing

Douglas Palmer was born on October 19th, 1951 in Trenton, New Jersey. He continued to live there and attend the Trenton public schools before he attending and graduating from Bordentown Military Institute. Palmer then went on to graduate from the private and historically black Hampton University located in Hampton, Virginia. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management in 1973. Douglas Palmer took office as the first African-American mayor of Trenton in 1990 after defeating former mayor and city council president Carmen Armenti. Mayor Palmer went on to serve five consecutive terms as mayor of Trenton spanning from 1990 all the way to 2010. He currently serves as the chairman of the Trenton Literacy Movement, a group located in Trenton trying to address the the city’s literacy crisis. In the four years the organization has existed, it has focused on evaluating and demonstrating the impact on children’s reading skills of the best of different education softwares they have tested. Palmer is also a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, which merged with the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America group to form Everytown for Gun Safety. They are an American nonprofit organization that advocates for gun control and less gun violence. The group was founded by Michael Bloomberg and is also largely financed by him.

    • Former mayor Douglas Palmer is chairman of this organization that is trying to help with the literacy problems that are going on in Trenton right now. Statistics from 2014-15 show that only three of the district’s 13 elementary schools had more than 20 percent of its fourth graders reading on grade level.

    • The FBI was investigating many housing developments years ago that were started under the former mayor Douglas Palmer. They were targeting the developer, Robert Kahan, rather than Palmer.
