The Transformation of Trenton’s Public Schools

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
For my project on Trenton, New Jersey I decided to look at the transformation of Trenton public school education. The events covered in my timeline start with the creation of “separate but equal” from the Plessy v. Ferguson case and ends with the construction of the new Trenton Central High School. In the middle my timeline covers many events regarding the fight for racial equality in education, as well as how the events of the 1960s affected the quality of Trenton public school education. After completing my research for the timeline, the final conclusion that I made is that the fight for racial equality and its many successes leading up to the 1960s created progressing and prominent schools in Trenton, where all races could and did excel in their schooling. However, the response by the New Jersey Department of Education to the events of the 1960s, and its mandates imposed on the Trenton school district led to the decreasing quality of Trenton public school education that we all see today.
