Smallpox: The Virus that Traveled

From unappealing, unhygienic beginnings, to unethical experimentation and uneducated outrage, the history of the smallpox vaccine has had a bumpy road. Starting in China and finding its way through the world, evolving and changing in form and name - the smallpox vaccine started as a powder and eventually found itself a liquid. This interactive map explains the most important stops around the world that allowed the vaccine to be discovered and distributed until smallpox was eradicated.

It should be noted that due to language barriers and the mistreatment and abuse of people of color, much of the history regarding inoculation and variolation is still being discovered. The Americas, in particular, would not have had as consistent and safe inoculation practices without the contributions of slaves, namely Onesimus, who shared their experiences with inoculation and how to practice it safely.
