Interview With TCNJ Student About Racism Towards Asians in America

I spoke with TCNJ student Zoe Talbot about her experience with racism as an Asian-American amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

I wrote my final essay about the state of racism towards Asians in America; that prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, when conspiracy theories regarding the virus’ origins fueled sinophobic attacks, it had existed largely undiscussed and unchallenged.

To gain perspective, I spoke to sophomore english and secondary education major Zoe Talbot regarding her experiences, and her thoughts on how this brand of racism is discussed in media.

We discussed the ways in which racism towards Asians differs from that towards other groups, and why she thinks people seem to be less aware of it. She also shared her thoughts on ways we as a nation can take steps to solve this problem.

Overall, it was a deep, enriching conversation with valuable insights. I think we both learned from each other; she certainly gave me much to think about.
