Qualifications for Registering to Vote

To register to vote in the state of New Jersey, you must be:

  • A citizen of the United States
  • At least 18 years by the date of the next election
  • A resident of New Jersey
  • A resident of the county 30 days before the election

You are not eligible to register to vote if:

  • You are serving a sentence or on parole or probation, as a result of a conviction of an indictable offense under federal law.
  • Note: If you are no longer serving a sentence, or no longer on parole or probation, you can vote in New Jersey by completing a new voter registration form.

    If you are a pretrial detainee or on bail pending appeal you do not lose your right to vote.
